Agent Hourglass Asks: Can You Do Kinky?

“Aaaaannnnnndddd thanks @nailsinc for my leather nails! #kinky” – Alexa Chung on Twitter

Que ‘media frenzy’. Undoubtedly this reaction was from one of two words – leather and kinky. So just what is it about these two words that drive both men and women crazy? Every season whether it’s on the catwalk or not the lingerie industry always features a bit of kink.

Well loved it may be, but is it in reach for everyone? I believe it is, and this is why. Although the extremes of kinky involve practices which many are not comfortable or familiar with, the look of kinky doesn’t necessarily involve any of these things. There’s nothing wrong with being sexually provocative ‘in an unusual way’.

A definition of Kinky

Nothing demonstrates this more than the reaction to the much talked about book Fifty Shades of Grey. Babeland, a sex toy shop found in New York reported a 30% increase in sales of kinky accessories since the book was released. As founder Claire Cavanah said: “The book is just an explosion of permission for [people] to try something new in the bedroom”.

Meanwhile in the UK Headen & Quarmby are planning to quadruple volumes and employ new staff to create 400,000 of it’s popular ‘Kinky Knickers’. Made of lace, not leather or PVC, and featured on national television they show that the definition of kinky can apply to a range of things. Essentially, kinky is what you make it!

So where did it come from? Leather clothes started for practical reasons from cowboys, to aviators to motorcyclists. Since it’s popularity in Rock’n’Roll and the gothic sub culture, it’s been popular on the fetish scene too.

PVC meanwhile became popular in the 60’s. Seen as the ideal fabric for futuristic clothes, the figure hugging properties helped it to a fetish/kinky status and was seen in the media from Audrey Hepburn in Two for the Road, to the TV series of the Avengers.

I’ll never forget my first purchase of something kinky. It was in Ann Summers – a PVC burlesque body with thick vintage style suspender straps and pink frills on the cups and bottom to make a bustle. I wasn’t married or in a relationship but there was something special about it. It’s that special feeling, and the visual impact that can help spice up your fun in the bedroom.

Since then I haven’t looked back. Many women I’ve spoken to think their husbands would laugh or think they were joking if they wore something kinky in the bedroom. When I got married I too was shocked to realise that my husband thought those things were ‘pervy’. But go with your gut ladies – he loved what I had taken with me, though he’d never admit it. It’s a secret, it’s naughty and it’s all yours!

Plus it can be surprisingly easy to get hold of and wear. Putting on a PVC maids outfit can make you feel incredible, plus is surprisingly practical to cook the dinner in too as it’s wipe clean (it’s true!). Did it go down well? Yes, in fact now I’m pregnant, but less on that…

The heroes of all things kinky at the moment is Atsuko Kudo. Winner of the UK Lingerie Awards 2011, featured in Time Out’s London’s Top 100 Shops as well as numerous fetish awards. From PVC gloves and waist belts to suspenders & couture gowns – whatever level of kink you feel comfortable with, you are sure to find it there.
